Queen by candlelight
Queen by candlelight · Midjourney
cinematic film still, a tight close-up of a young queen's face in a candlelit stone hall, crown catching the light, absolutely still and unreadable, warm candle glow on her cheek against the deep cool blue of the hall behind her, immense composure and threat, shallow focus, photorealistic, shot on 35mm, film grain, cinematography in the style of Bruno Delbonnel --ar 9:16 --style raw --stylize 250 --v 8.2 --relax --no painting, illustration, recognizable actor
Neon in the rain
Neon in the rain · Midjourney
cinematic film still, a tight close-up of a face on a rain-soaked neon street at night, water running down the skin, eyes lifted toward something above frame, hot magenta and amber neon on one side of the face against the cold cyan of the wet night on the other, immense atmosphere, shallow focus, photorealistic, shot on 35mm anamorphic, film grain, cinematography in the style of Christopher Doyle --ar 9:16 --style raw --stylize 250 --v 8.2 --relax --no painting, illustration, recognizable actor, cyberpunk cliche
Child lit from above
Child lit from above · Midjourney
cinematic film still, a tight close-up of a child's face lit from above by a huge warm unseen light, wonder and no fear, hair lifting slightly in an updraft, warm gold light from above against the deep cool blue of the night behind them, immense awe, shallow focus, photorealistic, shot on 35mm, film grain, cinematography in the style of Janusz Kaminski --ar 9:16 --style raw --stylize 250 --v 8.2 --relax --no painting, illustration, recognizable child actor
Agent in hard sun
Agent in hard sun · Midjourney
Modern studio spy-thriller still, photoreal, vertical composition. A woman in her early thirties in medium close-up, framed from mid-chest up, head high in the frame with her eyes on the upper third. She is locked onto something off-frame past camera-right: pupils tracking, jaw set, lips closed, breath held, shoulders squared and utterly still. Predatory calm rather than fear. Harsh midday sun directly overhead is the key, carving a hard bright plane across her forehead, cheekbone and the top of her jaw, with deep shadow pooling beneath the brow and under the chin; a large silver bounce from low and frontal lifts the eye sockets just enough that both eyes stay fully readable and carry a single hard catchlight. Roughly 4:1 contrast ratio, 5600K daylight, no fill on the shadow side of her neck. Skin rendered with real texture: open pores, faint sun sheen, a bead of sweat at the temple, fine flyaway hairs along the hairline lit to a bone-white specular rim that separates her skull from the background. She wears a deep teal technical shell jacket in matte cotton-nylon ripstop with a faint dry sheen, collar half-turned up, a pale salt crust of dried sweat at the collar seam and a dusting of fine gray grit across one shoulder. The teal jacket is the most saturated object in the entire frame, the chromatic anchor against a warm dun background; the sunlit plane of her face is the brightest object in the frame, the luminance anchor. Behind her, sun-bleached concrete and pale stone recede into heat shimmer, thrown far out of focus and compressed flat by a long lens: a hazed warm-gray field with soft blown highlights and no readable detail. Above her head, pale sun-hazed sky with visible atmospheric gradient and dust, textured air rather than empty space. A softly defocused sunlit concrete parapet edge slips through the lower-left corner. Shot on an 85mm spherical prime at f/2.2, shallow depth of field holding only her eyes and cheekbone critically sharp, ears and collar already falling off, gentle optical vignette, clean highlight rolloff. Steel-and-amber grade: cool neutral-dense blacks with a faint blue lean, warm amber midtones in the sunlit skin and the stone, restrained overall saturation except the teal. Fine daylight-stock grain, no digital smoothing. The image fills the entire frame edge to edge, no borders, mattes, or bars. --ar 9:16 --v 8.2 --raw --stylize 100 --no letterbox, black bars, borders, matte, split screen, diptych, triptych, collage, grid, text, watermark

Why it works

A face lit evenly from the front looks flat. Light from one place gives it shape, and the prompt has to say where that light lands. Each of these four prompts does.

Put the light on one cheek. In the queen shot, warm candle glow on her cheek lights one side of her face and leaves the other in shadow. The eye lands on the bright cheek first.

Light each side a different color. In the rain shot, hot magenta and amber neon on one side of the face puts warm color on one cheek and cold cyan on the other. Warm comes forward and cold falls back, so the face looks round.

Light it from above. The child prompt asks for a face lit from above by a huge warm unseen light. You never see the light, but the gold on top of the hair shows where it is.

Name the part that catches the light. The agent prompt asks for a hard bright plane across her forehead, and that is where the shine sits. The model puts the highlight where the prompt points.

Before you run it

Say where the light lands, not only what color it is. A fifth close-up asked for warm firelight on one side of the face. The fire showed up in the background, but her face came out evenly lit. A light the prompt only names may end up behind the subject instead of on them.

Expect the direction to drift. The agent prompt asked for sun directly overhead. Both renders came back lit from the side. The shine still landed on the forehead, because the prompt named it.

Use the same settings. The first three were made with --style raw --stylize 250 --v 8.2. The agent was made with --raw --stylize 100 --v 8.2.

To make it yours, change the face and keep the light line. Swap in your own character and keep the words that say where the light hits.
