Alone on the Stairs
How to make one person look alone. One still, one prompt, Midjourney.

Photoreal cinematic still, full frame edge to edge, image fills the frame. A single firefighter in full turnout gear and helmet, completely alone, climbs up a narrow smoke-filled apartment stairwell, seen from behind, his back to camera, ascending toward a hot orange glow at the top of the stairs. The stairwell is totally empty, no other people anywhere, everyone already gone. He is small in the frame, isolated, a lone silhouette against the orange smoke above, cold blue shadow below and behind him. Hazy, backlit, deep shadow, empty and silent. Lonely, urgent, still. 35mm, deep focus. --no letterbox, black bars, borders, matte, split screen, diptych, triptych, collage, grid, crowd, other people, evacuees, group, multiple figures, fire visible, flames, bright flat lighting, cartoon, deformed --ar 9:16 --raw --v 8.1 --hd
Why it works
Put one person in a frame and you usually get a portrait. To make them look alone, the frame has to show the empty space around them. Each line below does part of that job.
Turn him away. seen from behind, his back to camera hides his face. With no face to look at, the viewer looks where he is looking, which is up the stairs.
Give him somewhere to go. toward a hot orange glow at the top of the stairs puts the brightest light at the end of his climb. The eye goes to the brightest part of a frame first, so it follows him up.
Clear everyone out. no other people anywhere, everyone already gone tells the model the stairwell was full and is now empty. That is what makes it feel abandoned. An empty space with no reason looks like a set.
Fill the air. narrow smoke-filled apartment stairwell puts smoke between the camera and the walls. Smoke catches the light, so you can see how deep the stairwell goes.
Light him from behind. a lone silhouette against the orange smoke above turns him into one dark shape. A dark shape against bright smoke is easy to read, even on a phone.
Split warm from cold. cold blue shadow below and behind him makes the space behind him blue and the space ahead of him orange. The color shows where the danger is before anyone reads a word.
Before you run it
Use --v 8.1 for this shot. On --v 8.2, the same prompt drew him large and fully lit in all four renders. Version 8.2 makes the main subject bigger and sharper. That helps most shots, but this one needs him small and dark. On 8.1, all four came back as silhouettes.
Keep the fire off screen. --no fire visible, flames keeps the light a glow. The viewer has to imagine what is making it, and that is scarier than seeing it.
To make it yours, change the person and keep the rest. The six moves work for any lone figure: a diver, a soldier, a kid in a hallway.
