Why it works

A night scene needs a light the viewer can believe. This prompt uses one flare and tells the model what that flare touches. Each line below does part of that job.

Press him against the wall. pressed against the wall puts his back into the sandbags. Leaning back into cover shows he is hiding from something.

Fill the background with ruin. an endless ruined mud landscape stretching behind him fills the space past his face with broken ground and fires. A wasteland out to the horizon shows what he is hiding from.

Put the light source in the frame. a magnesium flare bursts overhead puts the flare in the sky at the top of the frame. You can see it, so the viewer believes every highlight below it.

Warm the light on his face. warm flare-light on his face keeps his skin warm even though the flare itself burns white. Warm skin stands apart from the cold ground behind him.

Wet the surfaces. the wet sandbags gives the trench wall a shine. Water catches the light, so the dark wall shows its shape.

Keep the night cold. the deep cold blue-black of the night beyond holds the sky and the far ground in blue. A dark blue frame makes the warm light look hotter.

Before you run it

Don’t count on “low angle.” The prompt asks for it, but the camera came back at his eye height. If you want the camera low, give it its own line and say where it sits.

Expect company. The prompt asks for a lone soldier, and a second figure still turned up, out of focus in the lower corner. If he has to be alone, say that nobody else is in the trench.

To make it yours, keep the flare and change the place. One light source in the sky, warm on the face, cold everywhere else. It works for a rooftop, a beach or a forest at night.
